Hey, Mr. Underwear.
What is it?
I can't do touch typing.
Typing without looking at the keyboard looks cool and speeds up your work.
And learning it is not difficult at all.
But!
If you don't know the tricks, you might never master touch typing.
1. Return to the Home Position
First, try placing your index fingers on F and J.
Did you place them?
There are bumps on the F and J keys.
These bumps help you identify F and J without looking at the keyboard.
But what if I don't have index fingers?
Then you'll have to adapt, won't you?
Now, place your other fingers on the home position as well.
The home position is the finger placement shown in the image below.
Always start typing from this position.
Why is that?
Well,
For example, if you want to type 'U,' you just press the key above 'J'. If it's 'Z', then the key below 'A'.
Remembering where each key is relative to the home position enables you to type without looking.
So, always return to the home position after each keypress.
2. Never Look Down
Alright, I'll start typing now!
Takeshi, you're looking at the keyboard.
But I haven't memorized the keys yet.
Try not to look even so.
Even if you're still unsure about the key positions...
You must not look at the keyboard.
Otherwise, you'll develop a habit of looking and never master touch typing.
Since many people look at the keyboard, try covering it with a towel like this:
But I'll make lots of mistakes this way.
It's okay. Making mistakes is part of learning to type accurately.
3. Learn the Key Layout
If you suddenly cover the keyboard, you might feel lost...
First, memorize the key layout, even if it's just roughly.
How do I memorize it?
The best way is to use a typing practice site and learn by typing.
The image above is from the site's "Learn Touch Typing" section. If you don't want to use a practice site, try memorizing the alphabet and numbers using the image below.
① With labels
② Without labels
After memorizing with "① With labels," test yourself using "② Without labels."
If you have a printer, printing and filling in the "② Without labels" can be helpful.
That sounds tedious. I'll just practice on the site.
That sounds like a plan.
This site features "Learn Touch Typing" for beginners to learn typing while having fun, "Typing Colosseum" for testing your skills, and "Player vs. Player Typing Battles" for competitive typing matches. All are free, so please feel free to try them out.
